Can you use a protein powder while pregnant?
So many of you have been asking me for years what brand of protein powder I recommend.
As you may be aware, I haven’t endorsed any particular protein company brands for a while now.
It's incredibly hard for me to recommend a generic protein that is suitable for everyone:
pregnant women.. kid-friendly... suitable to add into recipes... and those looking for a complete protein powder..
AND without those nasty additives.
I often ask, what if we stripped off the wrapping, stopped the marketing and saw products for what they actually are - ingredients.
I have always opted to publish blogs on what to look for, what to avoid and how you can better educate yourself in purchasing the best protein for you and your body.
With this in mind, I now have the chance to take the guess work completely out of it for you.
A few of the girls at the gym have been regularly using this protein and on their recommendation, I decided to give it a try over the last year.
The verdict's in, and I am LOVING it for so many reasons!!
I have been recommending our clients to the 180 Nutrition protein range, with the reassurance that the range contains NO additives.
This means I can have complete 110% reassurance when recommending it to our pregnant or breastfeeding clients!
Here’s some points about why I love 180 Nutrition grass-fed superfood protein powder:
- Anyone and everyone can use it
- I can put it in the boys' smoothies and I get the peace of mind knowing that there is no caffeine or additives in it
- Pregnant women reassured that it's 100% safe for pregnancy
- It's nutrient dense - containing extra superfoods that other straight proteins don’t have (which means extra vitamins and minerals for the family!)
- It doesn't put a dent in your wallet - the 1.5kg bag means that it's only $2.39 per serve!
- It bakes uhhhh-mazing. I have been adding in my superfood protein to a lot of my baked goods and it turns out delicious

Moving onto what would have to be one of my most frequently asked questions,
“What protein powder is safe for pregnancy?”
I have done the extensive research for you.
I even sat down with the owners and creators of 180 Nutrition to ensure that I had their word - 110% no nasties, 100% safe during pregnancy.
I understand that so many women are fearful about what they put into their bodies while pregnant, and rightfully so!
Add in the fact that a lot of protein powders contain caffeine and additives that aren’t even on the label, it can make it very daunting when choosing the right brand for you.
I am also extremely cautious about what I put in my children’s food.
With the boys having a smoothie every morning for breakfast, this is not something I wanted to mess around with.
Finding a powder I was happy for them to use daily took A LOT of research.
Stay tuned in the coming weeks for a blog on my boys' favourite smoothie recipe that they have every morning for breakfast!
It provides them with sustained energy throughout the day and a dose of protein, nutrients and carbohydrates!
I hope this blog and my upcoming blogs take away any apprehension towards taking protein powder while breastfeeding, or using them in your meals and drinks for the family.
It can be done! And I am SO glad I've come across a brand I can confidently trust and use on a daily basis.
