6 Tips For Successful Spring Cleaning

Spring has sprung and you know what that means? It’s time for a good ol’ SPRING CLEAN!

Who would have thought I would love spring cleaning as much as I do? I feel SO refreshed once I’ve done it and I can’t wait to get stuck in. Spring cleaning is a fun (yes, I said FUN!) and rewarding task that allows us to freshen up our homes and get a head start on the often hectic seasons of Spring and Summer. I understand it can be time consuming, but if you are remotely anything like me, a spring clean may be just what you need. I bet there is a whole list of tasks you've been meaning to tick off but haven't gotten around to yet. Regrout the bathrooms, anyone?

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are six spring cleaning tips to get you started.

  1. Declutter your home

The first step is declutter, declutter, declutter. You know what they say - less really IS more! To get started you need to identify problem areas, analyse reasons for the clutter, determine solutions, and implement them. Sorting your belongings into four categories—trash, give away, store, or put away—can also be effective as you go through the spring-cleaning process.

  1. Overhaul your cleaning products

Before you get started, consider giving your cleaning supplies an overhaul. Think green before you spring clean.  Tossing the toxins is the first step to creating a cleaner, healthier, and safer home. Avoid air fresheners and choose products that do not contain or have reduced amounts of fragrances, irritants, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and flammable ingredients.

  1. Clean room by room

Don’t try and take it all on at once and get lost in a haze of cleaning. Instead, take it one room at a time. Create cleaning checklists for each room to help you get organised and to remind you of the areas that need extra attention. Focus on the parts of your home that were largely neglected over the winter.

  1. Work from top to bottom

When cleaning, remember to always start from the ceiling down. This will force debris downward and keep you from having to re-dust or re-clean your space. Ain’t nobody got time for that! If you have a vacuum with an extension piece, use it to get cobwebs and dust from your ceilings, shelves and fans first. Then dust your furniture and other items before vacuuming all the dust and debris off your floors. It will save heaps of time.

  1. Make it a family event

Why should you have to do all the spring cleaning yourself? It’s time to get the whole family involved! Assign age-appropriate chores, so everyone feels included. Try throwing on some music as you all clean or establishing a household reward as an incentive to get the work done.

  1. Refresh and update

Many chores need to be done seasonally, especially in preparation for warmer weather. So incorporate them into your spring-cleaning routine to get them out of the way early. For instance, tackle outdoor chores, such as cleaning the windows, as soon as the weather warms up. Also, store winter clothing, bedding, decor, and other items. It’s time to pull out your spring items to give your home a refreshed look. If your space feels dark and heavy, you can make small changes to help make it light and fresh for spring. Adding new colourful pillows or art are great ways to change up your space.

I hope these spring cleaning tips help to make your season change a breeze!
