How to Meditate

There are so many positive, life-changing benefits to practicing meditation. Meditation is a widely spread practice from all around the world. 

It is known that to practice meditation is to positively impact your mental and physical well-being. 

Meditation is known to help many different areas. Some benefits include, but not limited to : 

  • Reducing stress
  • Combating mental health issues like anxiety, depression and more
  • Increases your inner peace
  • Enhances self-awareness

A great benefit to meditation is slowing down and really bringing you back to the present moment. 

Often, we forget what’s important because we live in such a rush. This leads to us feeling overwhelmed, stressed and unmotivated. 

Meditation draws your mind back and allows you to take a moment to reset. This ultimately helps uplift your mood, make healthier choices for your life, and motivate you to live your truth. 

So, the question is - How do we practice meditation?

Meditation comes in many different forms. It’s important to remember that meditation is all about connecting with yourself and finding a way that works for you. 

Often we hear about Yoga as the main source of meditation. In reality, there are many different things you can do to obtain the same benefits as meditation through yoga. 

You do not need fancy equipment or a membership at an expensive gym. You can take meditation into your own hands and form it however you like.

Here is a step-by-step guide to beginning meditation : 

Step One : Get comfortable

Begin by finding a quiet place in your home. Some may choose their office, their living room, even outside. The purpose is to create a safe, serene environment for yourself. No distractions. 

Step Two : Close your eyes and find your breath

Start by giving yourself 2-5 counts of heavy breathing. Connect with your breath. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth.

Tip : Put your hands on your stomach and note your stomach expanding and deflating. 

Feel the oxygen coming into your body. Let it fill you up and exhale. 

Step Three : Connect

At this moment, there are many different forms that you can take. It’s important to search for what your mind is wanting to do and stick with it. 

Ex.1 - I like to visualise the good energy coming into my body. Any bad energy that might have followed me goes out while I pull the positivity in. 

Ex.2- You can use this moment to set your intentions for the day. What day would you like to have? Think about the type of energy and person you’d like to be today. 

Ex.3  - Note what it is that’s distracting you. If you find your mind wandering - what is it that is keeping your mind busy? Is there something you need to clarify or work out? It’s important to take note of this in order to make a change once you walk away from meditation. Meditation will bring whatever it is that’s hovering over you forward and into the light.

E.4 - You can work on your affirmations during this time. Fill your mind with positivity and encouragement. Repeat what you want to see of this world and bring it forward. Pull your imagination into reality during your practice.

Listen to your mind. Your mind will let you know what it wants to do. It will guide you throughout the meditation and help steer your visualisation. 

Step four : Return 

During this time, you might have returned to your normal breath - which is good. As you near the end of your practice, pull yourself back in by resuming your deep breath. 

Do this 2-5 times and open your eyes softly. 

Step five : Gratitude

Finally, to finish your practice - you should end with gratification. Take a moment to thank yourself for being vulnerable. Thank yourself for being able to connect on a deeper level. Be kind to yourself, and know that it takes a lot of strength to personally reflect. 

Also, take some time to go through what you are thankful for. This will leave you on a positive, happy note which will last for the rest of your day.

Meditation is a powerful time to get to know yourself, every single day. Connect with your truth and regain footing on the present moment.

Whichever way you choose to meditate, know that it’s about bringing that positive, calm, and intuitive energy from your practice into your daily life.
