Sophie Guidolin and family with Santa for Christmas

How To Stay Accountable This Christmas

With the festive season upon us and the weather warming up, I can't help but get excited that it's almost Christmas! D-e-c-e-m-b-e-r! ! ! I count myself lucky that Christmas is warm for us. It means that we can enjoy summer fruits, salads, cold drinks and all the stuff that would make you shiver a bit during winter. So how do I keep myself on track when there's so many delicious things left, right and centre during Christmas season? It's not easy, but it's doable, by myself and you too! Below is a list of tips for my readers that will guide you on how to handle those temptations at the end of the year. Please leave a comment if you have advice on staying accountable during the holidays!

FRESH PRODUCE

The abundance of fresh produce at the supermarket this time of year means you have access to a massive range of fresh, wholefoods. This simply means that you can serve up your friends and family meals and snacks that are wholefoods based rather than processed and packaged. A lot of afternoons teas for my boys in summer involve lots of fresh fruit.

FUN

Take the opportunity to workout outdoors. Soak in some vitamin D and make it fun. Going for walks will also do you good and give you the opportunity to spend time with your friends and family outdoors. Not only are outdoor activities like going to the beach and hiking beneficial to your wellbeing, but they also go hand in hand with fresh food! Pack a picnic filled with wholesome food to munch on after your swim, run, hike, or walk.

ALCOHOL

It can be hard to say no to alcohol, especially because it's such a social thing to 'wine and dine'. Personally, I rarely drink alcohol. But for those who are looking for a better option, be conscious of the mixers you choose to mix your alcohol with. Choose soda water or water with squeezes of lime or lemon rather than soft drink. Choose your own squeezed juice over concentrated, store bought juice. Choose spirits that aren't creamy. (Yes Vodka over Baileys!)

SALADS

Is it just me or do salads taste that much better when the weather is warm? Rather than serving your protein (steak, chicken, prawns, tofu, etc) with bread or rice, opt for a generous serving of salad. You can even toss through some cooked quinoa for texture and to fill you up.

DON'T SKIP THE PARTY

If you're in a situation where the food served doesn't work well with your goals, bring your own food! Let your snacks be a clean, delicious option and make an example of healthy, wholesome living to those around you! If you need some ideas, check out my recipes here. I know how hard it can be to say no when the food served up at festive occasions are super indulgent, and you shouldn't have to always say no. Allow yourself to enjoy treats, but don't overeat. Christmas time shouldn't be seen as an opportunity to binge but to enjoy treats things in moderation.

EXERCISE

Regardless of the time of year, (minus part of pre and post pregnancy with the twins!) I always make the effort to exercise. If you have made exercise part of your lifestyle, it shouldn't be a chore. Neglecting exercise over a long period of time can also make it quite hard to get back on track. Keeping active during all times of the year, whether busy or not plays a crucial role in living a clean, lean lifestyle.
